Lizzie Liddell
My heart is open, Alice. Never closed, never locked. It needs no key. ”
Elizabeth "Lizzie" Liddell is the older sister of Alice Liddell and the eldest child of Arthur Liddell and his wife. At the age of 18, Lizzie died along with her parents during the fire that burned down their family home in Oxford. She is unmentioned in American McGee's Alice, but she does appear in Alice: Madness Returns through Alice's memories, and plays an important role in the story.
Lizzie is based on the unnamed sister from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, who is seen reading a book, which Alice describes as lacking "pictures or conversations." She also shared with Alice's dream of Wonderland, having dreamed the entire adventure herself, and then believing Alice would retain her child-like innocence.
BiographyEditLife and deathEdit
Due to Arthur's privileged job as a university dean, Lizzie lived a comfortable life with her family in Oxford, and was well-educated, having learned French and music with Alice through their Nanny.
At the age of eighteen, Lizzie had become the object of desire for Angus Bumby, who was one of her father's undergraduates at the time. Although Lizzie did not appreciate his advances, or him at all, Bumby became obsessed with her, believing she was just playing hard to get, and would stalk her and try to make her perform sexual acts on him that even a prostitute wouldn't do. Disgusted by him, Lizzie told Alice about the things Bumby did to her, and was planning to tell Arthur not to invite him around to their house again.
One night, infuriated by what he saw as Lizzie's "teasing", Bumby broke into the Liddells' house and raped her. After this, Bumby either killed Lizzie or knocked her out, locked her bedroom door from the outside, and used an oil lamp to set the house on fire to cover up his crime. Only Alice escaped the blaze alive. She had witnessed Bumby entering the house, but due to the trauma of the fire her mind turned Bumby into a centaur, and she believed that the noises from Lizzie's room only meant that Lizzie was talking in her sleep that night.
Bumby had kept Lizzie's door key with him after committing his crime, either as a memento to her or as a form of trophy.
After deathEdit
Eleven years after the fire, Alice began to realize that Lizzie's room was further away from the fire than her own, and that she disliked locked doors, thus she wouldn't have locked her bedroom door herself. Alice also believed that Lizzie would have been smart enough to jump out of her window to escape the fire, suggesting she was either dead or incapacitated before the fire reached upstairs; according to Wilton J. Radcliffe in a memory, after identifying the Liddell family's bodies, Lizzie's was the only one not burnt by the flames.
After working out that Bumby was behind the death of her family, and had been using Lizzie's key to hypnotize his patients, she confronted him before taking back Lizzie's key and pushing him in front of an oncoming train, killing him to avenge her family.
AppearanceEditIn the Liddell family portrait, Lizzie bears a strong resemblance to Alice as she looks now at the age of nineteen. She had shoulder-length, dark wavy hair, an oval face, large eyes, pale skin, and dons a long-sleeved shirt and a skirt held up with suspenders. It's likely she had green eyes like her sister.
PersonalityEditThrough Alice's memories, Elizabeth appears to be a friendly, sharp-minded girl who was much more adventurous than Alice when they were growing up. She was a very loving person, and in turn was much loved. She had a deep relationship with her little sister, even confiding in her about Bumby's sexual advantages towards her. However, though
she loved Alice deeplythe age gap between them was too great for her to be much of a playmate to her little sister.
Lizzie also possessed a mischievous, slightly wicked side to her; she had tried smoking a cigarette at least once (and revealed to her sister that it was disgusting), and knew how to get out of being grounded. She also had a generally low opinion of the undergraduates that tried to impress her father, calling them a "bunch of toadies."
TriviaEdit■In real-life, Alice Liddell's older sister was named Lorina Liddell and was three years older than Alice Liddell.
■Elizabeth's key is in the shape of the astrological sign of Venus which, while representing femininity and beauty, is also the sign of love.
■Through uncut footage of Madness Returns, Alice confirms that Bumby raped and then killed her sister. It can be found in the "VO_Alice" file in the INT folder in the PC version.
